Ueno Zoo is situated in the park of the same name. You can see a lot of animals there like elephants and penguins. The main attraction of the zoo are two panda bears which are also the only animals that are "guarded". The merchandising shop also has a large selected of panda related toys. Unfortunately, the zoo does not seem to have the slightest idea how to treat pandas - it looks more like a living room than a place where pandas could feel well.
The other animals aren't given much more space, though. Just like many zoos in Japan, the Ueno one has problems financing its expenses. New entertainment centres are attracting the crowds. There were not many Japanese at Ueno zoo on my day of visit and only two foreigners (including me). Fortunately, the Japanese rather shouted at the pandas than at the foreigners. One boy was actually so enthusiastic at seeing a panda, he shouted: "Panda!!! Paaaaaaaannndaaaa!!!".
